Diamond clarity is one of the four Cs that are used to judge the quality of a diamond. This refers to how many imperfections there are in a diamond and how visible these imperfections are. These imperfections are known as inclusions, while those that are found on the surface of the diamond are called blemishes. How and where these inclusions are located will affect the clarity of the diamond, and in turn, its value. A perfect diamond does not come with any imperfections and the stones with the least amount of imperfections are often prized the highest. Most often, diamonds are sold with inclusions that are not visible to the naked eye.

Importance of Diamond Clarity

Diamond clarity affects the worth of the diamond more than the other Cs do. Clarity is highly prized since the amount of clarity will determine how the diamond reflects light. Good clarity gives the diamond good reflection. Very few diamonds get an excellent clarity rating and the diamond with virtually no imperfections is virtually nonexistent or very expensive.

Factors that Affect Diamond Clarity

Inclusions and blemishes affect the clarity of a diamond to various degrees. The process of cutting or enhancing the appearance of the diamond can affect the clarity of the diamond. Grain boundaries, scratches and nicks as well as chips in the stone can also affect the clarity. Inclusions are the flaws located inside the diamond. These can be tiny dark spots inside the stone. Cracks deep down the stone also affect diamond clarity. The location of the inclusions significantly affect how the stone reflects light, especially if this is located on the side facets of the diamond. Blemishes on the side easily detract from the beauty of the diamond.

How to Measure Diamond Clarity

Diamond clarity is often measured using special magnified viewers that will show the imperfections that are not visible to the naked eye. In most cases, this is a ten-power microscope that clearly shows the tiniest blemish in the diamond under right illumination. The device is called a loupe, a handheld device that is used to view the diamond using a source that lights up the base of the stone from the side, with the crown protected from the light. Diamonds are studied from the culet, from the pavilion side, and from the crown side. Diamonds that contain little to no inclusion are given a rating of FL-IF. Others are rated VVS. Diamonds that contains little to no imperfections that are not visible to the naked eye are rated VS and do not cost as much as the other diamonds with higher ratings. For less expensive diamonds are those rated at SI3-I1. These have inclusions which are not often visible without magnification. In some cases a stereo binocular microscope is used before making a final examination with a loupe.
